Extensive psychological research has studied how people learn. From those studies, active learning strategies have developed. The following tips and tricks may be helpful to incorporate into your child’s study habits:

Learn concepts with acronyms.
Example: CUPS: C = Capitalize the first letter of a sentence; U = Use a capital letter for proper nouns (name, places); P = Punctuate the end of every sentence; S = Stop and start a new sentence. This assists students in remembering that every sentence needs both a capital letter and ending punctuation (period, question mark, or exclamation point).

Group information into meaningful units.
Example: For a mathematical problem, break complex problems into steps: solve for x, simplify, substitute. Chunking multi-step equations makes them manageable.

Combine words with photos, diagrams, or timelines.
Example: When studying, pair visuals alongside written descriptions. When students can see what they’re reading about, recall is stronger.
