                                                         Mrs. Marilyn Barnes - Principal

Let me open this greeting with a great big thank you to our parents for making sure that your son/daughter was at school on the first day after the winter break. Our attendance was at 98% with very few tardies. I am glad about this because we are beginning the final leg of the race to the Illinois Standard Assessment Test, which will be administered to all third through eighth grade students in the District. In fact, we are counting down and as of this note; we are only 29 days away from the test.

We do not want to over emphasize the importance of the test, but we cannot stress enough that the time span between January through March is critical. Therefore, we again ask for your continued cooperation in helping us prepare your child for the test as well as the next grade level. As our teachers continue to teach new skills and review skills already covered, we need your help and assistance in helping us strengthen all of the skills. In this last stretch, we continue to push our 25 Book Campaign because this helps build reading skills.

We are also asking that you allow your child to attend Saturday School, which will begin Saturday, January 16, 2010 and will continue through Saturday, March 13, 2010. These sessions are held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Medgar Evers P.A.C. Our Saturday school places tremendous emphasis on strengthening reading and math skills. You will note that we are presently focusing more on these two subjects in our classrooms as well. As we approach the test date, we scale down our concentration on other subjects and zero in on the two critical testing areas.

We once again encourage your continued support and ask that you assist us with the following:

1. Continue to assist your child with homework.

2. Set a specific bed time so that students are alert throughout the school day.

3. Make sure that your child arrives to school daily and on time.

4. Listen to your child read and discuss the stories or articles with them to check for understanding.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Barnes, Principal
